Fire Salts are a rare alchemy resource in Skyrim that can be used to make Fire resistance and Magicka restoration potions, Flame Atronach, Exploding Bolts for crossbows, etc. Moreover, it’s also a key ingredient required to complete the Stoking the Flames questline.
Although the resource is pretty rare, there are a few ways to get Fire Salts consistently. You can scavenge it from different world locations, as there are a fixed number of non-respawn-able Fire Salt in the game.
You can also craft Fire Salt yourself at the Atronach Forge, given you have the necessary resources. Another great way to get Fire Salts is via checking in with the apothecaries.
I’ll get to the detail further below.
World Locations
In my opinion, the best way to gather Fire Salts is to collect them from world locations. There’s a total of 50 samples of Fire Salts spread across 30 different areas in the game.
But instead of going through all the locations, I’ve compiled only the most accessible places where you can easily collect Fire Salts.
On Septimus Sigmus Outpost
The Septimus Outpost is located to the north of the College of Winterhold. You can get here by heading north from the Skytemple ruins. The outpost can be identified with two distinctive torches at the entrances.
There are three samples of Fire Salt located at this location, and they can be found placed in the cupboard.
Now, you can just take the salt from the cupboard, but if you do so in the presence of Septimus Sigmus, then he will turn hostile towards you. This may also disrupt the Discerning the Transmundane questline.
So make sure he’s not looking at you while you’re stealing the salt. You can also complete his quest to safely take the Fire Salts.
On Atronach Forge
The Atronach Forge is a secret place located right beneath the College of Winterhold. Unlike other hidden places, there are quite a few ways to access this location.
- You can enter through a trap door in the college courtyard’s left corner.
- You can also enter the trap door located beside the stairways inside the Hall of Countenance.
- You can also take a completely different route and enter through a cave on the college’s northern side, at the bottom of the giant rock below the college building.
The exact location of the Forge will defer depending on the entrance you chose to access the forge. For now, I’ll be accessing the forge from the trap door at the Hall of Countenance, as it’s the most convenient entrance.
- After entering through the trap door, head straight till you reach a room with four windows.
- Jump through the window that does not have the guard rails.
- Head to the opening passage on the left.
- Unlock the locked door on your left again.
- Keep heading straight, and you’ll reach the Atronach Forge room and find a couple of Fire Sale samples on the table.
On Mortal and Pestle
The Mortal and Pestle is an alchemy shop located in Dawnstar. The shop is just beside Beitild’s House.
- Enter the shop, and you’ll find one sample of Fire Salt on the Alchemy table.
- The second sample is just beside the Alchemy table on the shelf.
- You’ll find the third sample on a dresser located on the second floor.
Be careful while stealing the salt, as you’ll get a bounty if you do get caught by Frida. A much safer option to steal the salt is at night when she’s sleeping.
On Nightcaller Temple
Another great location to gather Fire Salts is the NightCaller Temple. It is located above the mountain, east of Dawnstar.
To access this temple, you’ll have to start the Waking Nightmare questline from Erandur. You can find him at the inn at Dawnstar.
After accepting the quest from him, he’ll guide you through the temple. You can find the Fire Salt sample in the laboratory. The room is easily distinguishable as it has three Alchemy tables.
Head downstairs, and you’ll find three samples of Fire Salts placed on the cupboard.
Flame Atronachs
Flame Atronachs / Flame Thralls are Daedric entities that can be encountered randomly in the game or can be summoned via the conjuration spell.
When you defeat a Flame Atronach, they have a guaranteed chance to drop one unit of Fire Salt.
Note: This does not apply to the Flame Atronach/ Thrall that you’ve conjured.
Atronach Forge
The most consistent way to get Fire Salts is by crafting them at the Atronach Forge. You can craft spell tomes, conjuration staff, elemental Atronachs, as well as elemental salts at the Atronach Forge.
To make Fire Salt at the forge, you’ll need one Salt Pile, one Soul Gem (can be of any type), and a Ruby (can be flawless as well). If you do not have the Ruby gemstone, then you can even use Ruby embedded jewelry such as Silver Ruby Ring or Gold Ruby Necklace.
Simply put all of the ingredients in the offering box and then pull the lever. Then, you can collect the Fire Salt from the Summoning platform.
Alchemy Shop
Although you can buy Fire Salt from apothecaries like any other alchemy ingredients, they still have a low chance of appearing in the apothecary’s inventory.
So, you can either reset their inventory by skipping three in-game days or check in with the rest of the apothecaries. I’ve listed all of them below.
- Angeline Morrard/Vivienne Onis in Angeline’s Aromatics (Solitude)
- Arcadia in Arcadia’s Cauldron (Whiterun)
- Avrusa Sarethi in Sarethi Farm
- Bothela/Muiri in the Hag’s Cure (Markath)
- Elgrim/Hafjorg in Elgrim’s Elixirs (Riften)
- Elynea Mothren in Tel Mithryn (Solstheim)
- Frida in The Mortar and Pestle (Dawnstar)
- Herluin Lothaire in The Ragged Flagon (Riften)
- Lami in Thaumaturgist’s Hut (Morthal)
- Milore length in Raven Rock (Solstheim)
Here’s a video guide demonstrating the above.
