Mew was introduced by Pokémon Go along with other mythical Pokémon’s on March 2018. With the ability to make itself invisible at will, Mew is very adaptable and can help you win many battles. Trainers can catch this Pokémon only once in the whole game.
And the only option to catch Mew is through Research Quests. Although the process to catch mew is a tad bit longer, but it is totally worth it.
How to Catch Mew in Pokemon GO
Mew is a Psychic-type mythical Pokemon that does not evolve. It is the number 151 Pokémon on Pokedex. The process of catching Mew is different than any other Pokémon as you cannot catch it in the wild.
You can only get it from the Research Quests. Research quests are those in which there are few challenges or objectives, and you will get rewards upon their completion. Complete a Special Research Quest, and you can get mew as a reward. If you are not aware of what a special research quest is, it is a story-driven long quest with eight stages to complete fully.
You will get Mew only after completing each stages of a special research quest, “A Mythical Discovery,” given by Professor Willow. Here is the list of all the stages with corresponding challenges and their rewards of this quest.
Stage One
Objectives | Rewards |
Spin Five PokéStops | 500 XP |
Catch 10 Pokémon | 500 XP |
Transfer Five Pokémon | 500 XP |
Reward Upon Completion | 10 Great Balls, Incubator, and Three Lure Modules |
For the first challenge, you have to spin the Pokestops that can be found plenty on the map. Go near the Pokestops and swipe them. Do this five-time but remember, after each spin, it will have a cooldown before spinning again.
The next challenge is to catch 10 Pokémon, which will be pretty easy. If you get a copy of any Pokémon, you already have, transfer it to complete your third challenge.
To transfer any Pokémon, follow these steps:
- Press the Pokeball icon on the main map.
- Then, go to the Pokémon option.
- Choose any of the Pokemon and press the three bars icon on the bottom right.
- After that, click on Transfer.
Stage Two
Objectives | Rewards |
Earn Two Candy While Walking Your Buddy | 1,000 XP |
Make 10 Great Throws | 1,000 XP |
Hatch Three Eggs | 1,000 XP |
Reward Upon Completion | 2,000 Stardust, Three Incense, and 20 Great Balls |
To start off, choose a Pokémon as your buddy. You can do so by tapping on the avatar icon on the bottom left and then clicking on “Choose Your Buddy“. You can choose any Pokémon you like and make him your buddy. I recommend Magikarp, as it will be very helpful in the later stages. Then with the help of your buddy, collect two candies.
For the second challenge, you have to make 10 Great throws. While throwing a Pokeball to catch a Pokémon, there is a bullseye circle. Try to throw the Pokeball when the bullseye circle is very small for a Great Throw. An excellent throw is also counted as a Great Throw, so it will be easy if you are experienced.
Pokémon eggs are in abundance in Pokémon GO. Each egg can be hatched after walking a specific distance. So, choose a Pokémon egg which requires a low distance to hatch, and hatch three eggs to complete the third challenge.
Stage Three
Objectives | Rewards |
Reach Trainer Level 15 | 1,500 XP |
Battle In Two Raids | 1,500 XP |
Battle In a Gym Twice | 1,500 XP |
Reward Upon Completion | Fast TM, Charge TM, and Two Star Pieces |
Completing stage three is very easy. You just need to reach level 15. Do simple tasks like walking, catching Pokémon’s and you will do that in no time.
Next, you need to battle in two raids and compete in the gym twice. This is also doable as Gym and Raids can be found in abundance while walking.
Stage Four
Objectives | Rewards |
Earn The Kanto Silver Medal | 2,000 XP |
Evolve 20 Pokémon | 2,000 XP |
Earn Five Candy While Walking Your Buddy | 2,000 XP |
Reward Upon Completion | 4,000 Stardust, Three Lure Modules, and 20 Great Balls |
The first challenge is to earn the Kanto Silver Medal. Catch 50 original Pokémon and you will get your hands on this medal.
Then you need to evolve 20 Pokémon. You can easily evolve a Pokémon with candies available in the game. Each Pokémon requires specific number of candies to evolve. To evolve a Pokémon, choose a Pokémon from your Pokedex and tap on Evolve.
Finally, earn five candies with your buddy. Just make sure you earn those candies by walking.
Stage Five
Objectives | Rewards |
Catch Ditto | 2,500 XP |
Catch 10 Ghost-Types | 2,500 XP |
Make 20 Great Throws | 2,500 XP |
Reward Upon Completion | Premium Raid Pass, Lucky Egg, and 15 Revives |
Completing the first objective can be very challenging for you as Ditto is a very rare Pokémon and a very hard catch. As it can take the form of other Pokémon, you will seldom find ditto in its true form.
Ditto cannot disguise all Pokémon, so looking for a specific Pokémon is the way to go. Here are the Pokémon to look for:
- Paras
- Hoothoot
- Spinarak
- Hoppip
- Remoraid
- Whismur
- Gulpin
- Numel
- Bidoof
- Foongus
To complete the second challenge, head out to catch 10 Ghost Type Pokémon from 8 pm to 8 am. Because in this time, you can find Ghost Pokémon easily.
For the third challenge, make 20 great throws, as explained in stage two.
Stage Six
Objectives | Rewards |
Reach Trainer Level 25 | 3,000 XP |
Evolve A Magikarp | 3,000 XP |
Perform 10 Raids | 3,000 XP |
Reward Upon Completion | 6,000 Stardust, Five Rare Candies, and Three Incense |
Up to this point, you will definitely reach level 25. If not, catch more Pokémon, perform Raids, and do other activities that will give you XP. For extra XP, use Lucky Eggs while performing Raids or evolving Pokémon.
The most challenging and time-consuming challenge of all Stages is the second challenge of this stage ,i.e., evolving a Magikarp. To evolve Magikarp to Gyarados, it needs 400 candies. So, in the previous challenges where you need to walk with your buddy to get candy, choose Magikarp as your buddy. Also, using Pinap Berries on Magikarp will double the candy collection.
To complete the third challenge, perform 10 Raids which you will have probably done already.
Stage Seven
Objectives | Rewards |
Catch 50 Pokémon Using a Berry | 3,500 XP |
Earn A Kanto Gold Medal | 3,500 XP |
Perform An Excellent Curve Throw | 3,500 XP |
Reward Upon Completion | 8,000 Stardust, Five Great Balls, and Mew |
For the first challenge, feed a berry to a Pokémon and then catch it. Do it 50 times.
The second challenge is to get a Kanto Gold Medal. To do so, catch 100 Kanto region Pokémon. If you don’t have 100 Kanto region Pokémon, catch them from Kanto events or in the wild.
The third challenge requires performing an excellent curve throw, which is a little challenging. First, hold the Pokeball until the circle is very small to get an excellent curve throw. Then, when Pokémon tries to attack and is very near, spin the ball and throw it as near to the center as possible.
Stage Eight
Objectives | Rewards |
Catch Mew | 4,000 XP, 10,000 Stardust, Super Incubator, and 20 Mew Candy |
After completing stage 7, you will see Mew ready to be caught. Catch it like you catch other Pokémon by throwing the Pokeball. Even if you fail to catch Mew, you will get lots of chances as Mew will not run away like other Pokémon.
