The Restoration School of Magic offers a range of healing and protection spells. In general, there are three types of Restoration magic. i.e., Ward spells, Healing spells, Repel spells.
- The Ward spell creates a magical shield that offers protection as long as you channel the Ward.
- The Healing spell prioritizes restoring the health points of the caster, your allies, or even your undead minions. If you can manage your Magicka well, you can completely replace the healing potion with just healing Restoration magic.
- The Repel spell, in particular, focuses more on pushing back the undead enemies.
We’ve gone through all the Restoration spells, tested them in combat, and listed only the best from the bunch. Let’s start our list with the best Ward spell.
Greater Ward
Wards, in general, are magical shields that protect you from melee and spell damage. The Greater Ward is the best version of all the Ward spells.
Casting this Ward spell brings out a shield of magic that increases your total armor rating by 80 points while simultaneously absorbing 80 points of spell damage.
This Ward spell is most effective against spell caster enemies, shouts from enemies like Draugr overlords, dragon breaths, etc.
You can buy this Adept-level spell from Colette Marence at the College of Winterhold.
Close Wounds
Close Wounds is a very powerful restoration spell that can heal the player by 100 points which also makes it a much better version of the Fast Healing spell.
Furthermore, getting the Respite perk from the Restoration Skill tree will restore your Stamina points in addition to restoring your Health points.
Like the Greater Ward spell, you can get this spell from Colette Marence in the College of Winterhold.
Alternatively, you can get the Spell Tome for Close Wound as a reward for completing the Pilgrimage quest.
Note: In order to initiate the Pilgrimage quest line, you must level up your Restoration skill above 40.
Heal Others
While the Close Wound is an excellent self-healing spell, the Heal Other spell is the best spell to heal your allies. Casting this spell while targeting your allies will heal them for 75 points, excluding Atronachs, machines, or the undead.
There are multiple ways to acquire this Spell Tome for Heal Others.
- You can buy the spell from Collette Marence
- Pick up the Spell Tome from the Shalidor’s Maze in the Labyrinthian.
- Get it as a quest reward for completing the Pilgrimage questline.
We’ve put this spell on our list instead of Healing Hands because the latter spell restores a small number of health points while continually draining your Magicka.
However, the Heal Other spell has a burst health-restoring effect which is much more effective.
Heal Undead
This spell works quite similarly to the Heal Others spell. The only difference is that Heal Other restores the health of the living, whereas the Heal Undead restores the health of, you guessed it, the undead.
The Heal Undead is an essential spell that every necromage player should have at their disposal. Using this healing spell on your Dead Thralls can make them persistent allies that can help you in any encounter.
To get your hands on this Adept-level spell. First, you’ll need to
- Get the Dawnguard DLC expansion.
- Then, you’ll need to side with the vampires during the main campaign.
- Finally, speak with Ronthil inside Castle Volkihar and buy the Spell Tome from him.
Bane of the Undead
The Bane of the Undead is a very useful spell and also among the most powerful dead-repelling spells in the game. The only trade-off of this spell is that it’s a Master-level spell, which can make it a bit challenging to acquire.
Casting this spell in a room full of the undead will set them on fire, causing them to flee from the area.
However, this spell will only affect enemies that are below level 30. Some of the undead enemies include Draugrs, Skeletons, Ghosts, Vampires, Thralls, Zombies, etc.
Since this is a Master-level spell, you can only buy it from Colette Marence after completing the Restoration Ritual Spell quest line from her.
Grand Healing
This spell is perhaps the best healing spell in the game that can heal you and your allies simultaneously. Casting this spell will restore the health points of everyone within a 15 ft radius.
Furthermore, you can make this spell even more potent by getting the Respite perk and the Regeneration perk from the Restoration skill tree.
The Respite perk allows you to restore stamina in addition to restoring health, whereas the Regeneration perk increases the health restoration point from 200 to 300.
Grand Healing is an Expert-level spell you can buy from Collete Marence at the College of Winterhold after reaching level 65+ in Restoration magic.
